Rem-like sleep in infants ( active sleep ): heart rate and respiration quickens, about 50% of sleep is like this, not a dreaming state. Sids: sudden infant death syndrome, when an infant stops breathing at night. Back-to-sleep: campaign to have infants placed on their back, with a firm mattress, and nothing else in the crib. Growth spurt: period of rapid growth in height and weight. Puberty: the period of maturation during which the sexual organs mature. Primary sex characteristics: development of reproductive organs and structures. Secondary sex characteristics: visual signs of sexual maturity that do not directly involve sex organs. Senescence: natural physical decline brought on by age. Primary aging: aging that involves universal and irreversible changes that, due to genetic programming, occur as people get older. Secondary aging: changes in physical and cognitive functioning that are due to illness, health habits, and other individual differences, but that are not due to increased age itself and not inevitable.
