Coaches can take on both roles but must not overmanage or under- lead: appointed vs emergent leaders. Appointed leaders are given this authority whereas emergent leaders have earned respect from others. Understanding leadership: trait approach: leaders are born (with common characteristics) not made. Research conducted after ww2 proved personality traits do not guarantee successful leadership: behavioral approach: leaders are made. Anyone can become a good leader by learning behaviors or being in a certain environment. 2 key categories of effective behaviors include consideration and initiation: john wooden, ucla basketball coach, observed this approach in 1976 and emphasized effort over outcome. 7 laws of learning: explain, demonstrate, imitate, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat: behavioral guidelines: immediate reinforcement after positive behaviors and effort, provide encouragement and corrective instruction, avoid punishment after mistakes, interactional approach: combination of both characteristics and behavior. Characteristics are important but don t ensure success: relationship oriented leaders: develop and maintain good interpersonal relations.
