Alternative theories have emerged in international relations since and due to the end of the cold war: these theories have begun to discuss culture and identity. Constructivism as a theory is a popular challenger to realism and liberalism: constructivism is not a theory of international relations, rather it is a social theory. It is not state centric: the world is a social construction . Realism states that anarchy leads to competition between states. Liberalism states that interdependence between states leads to cooperation. Constructivism states that the interpretation of reality deines states" behavior. Anarchy is what states make of it alexander wendt. The pattern of state behavior is process, not structure. Identities depend on an agreement between self and others.
