Lymphatic system; does not produce cells but helps regulate them. Definition: process that stops bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. Intrinsic pathway- lab test ptt (partial thromboplastin) (30-45 s) Extrinsic pathway- lab test pt (prothrombin) (11-16 s) Definition: reduction of rbc volume or hgb concentration to levels below normal. Basic causes: excessive blood loss loss of plasma and formed elements slow bleed (ie. gi), child may adapt so rbc level may be normal but quality decreased. 2. increased destruction of rbcs defect in rbc that shortens life span of it (ie. sickle cell) factors cause hemolysis in normal rbcs (ie. giving wrong blood type, burn patients, toxic drugs) 3. impaired or decreased rate of rbc production. Bone marrow failure: replacement of bone marrow by fibrosis or neoplastic cells, depression of bone marrow, interference with bone marrow activity. Deficiency of essential nutrients to make rbc: iron, amino acids; vit b6 and b12, c; folic acid; copper.
