Linguists have assumed there are discreet levels which re ect components of a speaker"s internal grammar. Focus on data: generative approach = noam chomsky. Ex: the cat is under the blanket vs. the blanket is over the cat = equate the same meaning. Paris is the capital of france vs. paris is not the capital of france = contradict each other: green arrow killed damien vs. damien is dead = entailment, one entails the other. Saussure: lexical semantics -- the study of signs/signi ers. Signi ed = concept/meaning // signi er = the physical component. Sign = the relationship between concept and label. There is a relationship between a word"s sense and its reference to something in the outside world beyond cognition. Reference: the relationship language hooks onto the world.
