Document Summary

An accumulation of excess liquid in tissue (swelling in the face, ngers, ankles, abdomen) 3 fundamental causes: increased ltration, reduced reabsorption, and blockage of the lymph. One important cause of increased ltration is the failure of the ventricles: failure of the right ventricle: Causes blood to back up in the right atrium: slows down return of blood from the body. Pressure builds up in systemic capillaries with increased uid forced into systemic tissues: systemic edema: failure of the left ventricle: Causes blood to back up in the left atrium which slows down return of blood from the lungs. Pressure builds up in pulmonary capillaries with increased uid forced into lung tissues: pulmonary edema (much higher bp for the lungs: usually have a low bp) Systemic edema could cause circulatory shock: too much uid may move into the tissue spaces, this lower blood volume: causing a drop in systemic bp.
