Tidal volume: relaxed inflow/outflow, about 500ml for quiet breathing. Emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease combines elements of both lungs less compliant lung tissue damage interferes with expiration. Measurements of ventilation spirometer: measures ventilation, recaptures expired breath and records rate and depth of breathing, speed of expiration, rate of oxygen consumption. Tidal volume (tv): volume of air in one quiet breath. Inspiratory reserve volume (irv): air in excess of tidal inspiration that can be inhaled with max effort. Expiratory reserve volume (erv): air in excess of tidal expiration that can be exhaled with max effort. Gas transport in blood is process of moving gases from the alveoli to the systemic tissues and vice versa. Oxygen concentration in arterial blood: about 99% bound to hemoglobin while 1% dissolved. All co2 is dissolved as it leaves body cells and enters tissue fluids and then enters plasma. Systemic gas exchange: loading of co2 and the unloading of o2 at the systemic capillaries.
