Organ system: unique collection of organs, unique function of organs: 11 organ systems. There are organs within organs- skin is the largest organ, within skin are thousands of smaller organs. Characteristics of life all living organisms must possess. Organization/cells cell is minimal key structural unit first cell life: first step towards life organization chemical matter to a higher level from nonliving to living basis to cell theory of life. Energy use/metabolism excretion anabolic reactions: producing something from smaller molecules catabolic reactions: breaking down larger macromolecules into smaller components. Metabolic rate: energy a whole animal uses per unit time. Basic rate of metabolism when its resting, not reproducing, postabsorptive (soon after its digested), and in its thermoneutral zone (not either cold or heat stressed). Capable of moving away or towards it. Ex: irritation, excitability: must be able to recognize environment to be alive.
