Compare and contrast germline and somatic cell mutations. Describe how germline mutations are linked to evolutionary processes. The environment can thus pass down the trait that is most favorable to the environment. Explain the difference between the mutation rate for a given nucleotide and the mutation rate for a given cell. Passed to progeny cells in mitotic division. Only cells that descend from mutated cells are affected. Explain what it means to say that mutations are random. Mutations are random, selection is done by the environment. Describe the effects of nonsynonymous, synonymous, and nonsense mutations on a protein and the effects of small insertions or deletions in an open reading frame. Point mutation when the amino acid sequence is changed due to the mutation. Point mutation if an error occurs but the codon still codes for the same amino acid and results in a fully functioning protein.
