There are rich and poor, but we lie to ourselves to believe that we can become the other class and the differences don"t add up to class barriers. Merit has replaced inherent privilege in many respects. Class is a culture, rank tribe, and taste. Class is one of the ways societies sort themselves out. Class is self defined in so many ways. Mass production, the factory system, raw capitalism. Changed the definition of work and what it meant to be an american worker as wage dependency with time spent replacing task accomplished. Skilled labor and pride of ownership was replaced with machines in control of unskilled labor. Connection between ownership and worker was lost. Relying on corp to take care of people. Factories were the homes of machinery and people were simply a cost factor in a production system.
