The class will primarily focus on the history and philosophical foundations of industrial-organizational. There will be emphasis on the major roles and functions of an i-o psychologist, and a discussion of the specialties and variety of work settings in which the professional works. Current issues, trends, etc will also be discussed. The entire class is structured as a group assignment in order to mimic the organization of the workplace. The majority of assignments, even exams, will involve the group. Participation is mandatory, or else you will not pass. There are two journal article review assignments. There are three exams, and no quizzes. What else is there: personal satisfaction, fulfillment, and pride of accomplishment, emotional security, self-esteem, and contentment. Good work vs. bad work: good work is fulfilling, valuable, and moves us in the direction of our own personal goals, while bad work is draining and feels pointless. Employers and employees must work together to create opportunities for good work.
