Social anxiety disorder: persistent fear of social or performance requirements that expose them to scrutiny and possible embarrassment fear of humiliation or embarrassment. These children want to be liked by other people, but their fear of acting in a way that may humiliate themselves is so intense that it often leads to loneliness and suffering. Negative cycle that ends up making kids feel more anxious and: lifetime prevalence= 6-12% more inadequate. Girls are more commonly diagnosed than boys girls are more concerned with social competence than are boys and attach greater importance to interpersonal relationships. Very rare in children under 10 generally develops after puberty. Most common age at onset in early to mid-adolescence. Attempt to experience relief from social anxiety by drinking alcohol to avoid these fears. Lower inhibitions and use alcohol as a way to cope with social anxiety. Behavioral avoidance through alcohol, which actually makes symptoms worse over time.
