MEA 200 Lecture 2: L2. Evolution of Ocean Basins
Document Summary
The supercontinent of pangea was once made up of all three land masses we recognize on our earth today. Theory of plate tectonics is the idea that the earth"s crust and upper mantle are broken into sections called plates that move around on the mantle. Lithosphere the crust and part of the upper mantle. Asthenosphere the plastic-like layer below the lithosphere. Continents occupied different locations on earth"s surface in the geologic past. Continents later drifted across surface of the earth to their present locations. Wegener proposed pangaea one large continent existed 200 million years ago. Matching sequences of rocks and mountain chains. Similar rock types, ages, and structures on different continents. Paleozoic to early-middle mesozoic rock on widely separated continents. Evidence of glaciation in now tropical regions. Direction of glacial flow and rock scouring. Plant and animal fossils indicate different climate than today. Same fossils found on continents that today are widely separated.
