Document Summary

You cannot separate human health from the environment. Animals are good sentinels: pattern of lyme in dogs is very similar to that of humans. Families: muscidae: house flies, striped thorax, yellow abdomen, calliphoridae: blow flies, often shiny/metallic, sarcophagidae: flesh flies, striped thorax, grey, checked abdomen, they all visit dead things and make maggots. They all have mechanical transmission of disease: usually fecal/oral. Direct mechanical transmission: pinkeye in cattle, caused by diptera, any hematophagous arthropods, and ants, ex) hep b, anthrax, bovine virus diarrhea, ehrlicia, mastitis. Indirect/contaminative mechanical transmission: more common, usually food-borne (fecal-oral) or soil-borne, food sources, fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy, shellfish (were a source of cholera, agents, virus, bacteria, most important here, protozoa, helminths (worms) Important mechanical vectors: synanthropic: household pets, flies, long flight, feeding habits (drinking liquids), regurgitate to drink stomach material, bubbling behavior (vomit) to extract nutrients, also pick up pathogens, hairy- opportunity for pathogens to stick on, cockroaches. Tactics: highly visible attacks, soft targets.
