Document Summary

Maybe some can identify with the perfect man or maybe they can participate in a perfect friendship or maybe they want to fantasize about sex and rebellion. They may allow voyeurism and sadomasochistic fantasies to be played out. Maybe they think prison movies can provide supposed insider information about prison life. But, most films do not reflect the true nature of prisons, which is boredom, lack or normal relationships with family, co-workers, and the world, and of being around undesirable companions. Symbols are used in movies to communicate ideologies of the film-makers, the film- makers values. For example, there are often three main themes that might be found in prison movies: critique of society, critique of the corrections system, and critique of oppression of men. Movies, television, radio, and books were fairly easy to figure out in the old days. They conveyed to us what was good and bad and they conveyed our values.
