FCST 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Discrimination Based On Skin Color
Document Summary
Black is a race, african american is an ethnicity. Blacks have always been looked at as lower throughout history. Whether it is as clear as slavery or as subtle as micro-aggressions, this is bad. Non-whites are more likely to be pulled over or searched. Blacks are more likely to be convicted or charged unfairly. Media hypes up these negative racial events (the amount of shootings) Focus on slavery, social, economic and political forces within historical contexts. Slavery led to pathology be creating an economically unstable matriarchal family. This family structure had led to social problems in the black community. Shift from pathological models and towards resilience. Found two parent households prominent during and after slavery, and regardless of ses and geographic location. We had a pathological view of families (broken) but it has shifted over time and now we see black families as resilient (family first) Idea that black families are father absent were completely false until the 1980s.
