Ingestion, digestion, and absorption of fluids and nutrients. Gi tract structurally complete at birth but is immature. Sucking is a reflex until 6 weeks of age, then it is voluntary. Growth and development of gi tract interrupted in first trimester. Atresia: absence or closure of a normal body orifice. Risk for impaired parent/infant attachment r/t newborns structural defect. Risk for delayed growth and development r/t altered nutritional intake. Esophagus and trachea do not develop as parallel tracts. Keep hob elevated to minimize aspirate into the trachea. Monitor respirations during feeds once oral feeding begins. Teach parents how to care for gastrostomy tube at home- s&s of infection @ site/complications. Occurs in boys more than girls (4:1 ratio) Inability to move food from stomach to duodenum. Occur in isolation or with other defects vacterl. Protrusion of an organ through the muscle wall of the cavity that normally contains it. Abdominal contents protrude into lung cavity through the diaphragm.
