How much do we interact with people: we interact with people less now than in the past, the less interaction, the less likely people are to vote, why did this happen, ex: television; people would stay home instead of go out in public, less civic engagement = less voter participation, change in the voting age policy. He was strong federalist: madison talked about the dangers of political parties, the framers realized that some sort of political parties was going to be necessary because of the already existing groups of people with conflicting ideas about how government should work, hamilton was a very strong federalist/central government guy, madison wasn"t as strong; tied closely to thomas jefferson. Functions of parties: make democracy work, parties are useful, they protect democracy, they can provide a way to express conflict and to change administrations in a non violent way, organize government, at every level of government in the united states, they help make it stable.
