Athenian government was based around an idea of democracy, which to them meant a government made up of the citizens and ruled in their interests. From the bottom up was considered to be vital for the government to function by the ancient. This was evident in the people who ran their government. Athenian government were trained professionals; most were ordinary citizens who were selected at random or elected for one year terms. The council is an excellent example of athenian government by the people. The council was made up of five hundred members who were grouped based on their tribe. Each tribe had a part of the year where they lead the council, and each day, a different member of the leading tribe was placed in the lead.
