Chesapeake bay: water is very important for getting around; much easier than over land. Life in the 17th century chesapeake: 6 persons per square mile. Much different than other settlements, which consisted of compact towns. Weren"t there for community; wanted to get rich with crops and needed land: most people were near the coast. Waterway was important for shipping crops to england, their main purchaser: malaria: a great debilitator. Another difference between this area and new england; were many such diseases: life expectancy: 48 years for men, 44 years for women. Malaria didn"t kill you, but it made you weak so something else could: parental death. Most children lost one parent; 1/3 of children lost both lots of blended families. Mothers and fathers had different roles, so children needed both lot of different family living situations. More common than in northern new england less stable: harsh living conditions. Most settlers lived in a one room shack with a dirt floor.
