Demeter is distraught; wanders, torch in hand, for nine days. Only the goddess hecate heard persephone cry out. Hecate: goddess who controls dark powers of the earth/underworld. Black magic, witchcraft, curses: minor goddess. Demeter and hecate go to helios, who saw the abduction. Done with the approval of zeus; persephone will be the bride of hades. Demeter shuns the company of the gods, and walks the earth in disguise: persephone and hades. Persephone becomes bride of hades; queen of the underworld: grief of demeter at eleusis. Demeter is disguised as an old woman named deo .
