Document Summary

Purpose: to provide sufficient information to develop understanding of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology as it relates to the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with neurogenic communication disorders (aphasia, msd, etc. ) Overview: structures & systems: anatomic levels, skull & boundaries, coverings, neurons, cerebrum, brain stem, & cerebellum, tracts & pathways, ventricular system, vascular system, other- Overview: structures & systems: anatomic level. Includes cerebrum, brain stem, cerebellum, spinal cord. Cranial nerves, spinal nerves, some autonomic nervous system. Neurons exiting cns, connect to muscles, etc: skull & boundaries. Openings for cranial nerves & vascular structures: meninges (coverings & spaces) Venous sinuses between two layers of dura mater. Nonvascular; not contoured, therefore creating subarachnoid space. Inner layer- nonvascular; follows contour of brain. Subarachnoid space- beneath arachnoid; filled with cerebrospinal fluid. Anatomy: glia, dendrites, cell body, axon, myelin. Physiology: neural conduction (within a neuron) vs. synaptic transmission (from one neuron to another neuron or muscle: tracts and pathways.
