Document Summary

A change in allele frequencies in a population over time. Some alleles become more common relative to other alleles in the population. Does not require a change from one species to another. Does not indicate why allele frequencies have changed. The variation comes from mutations that generate new alleles. Selection: a process by which allele frequencies change due to differences among individuals in the number of surviving offspring they produce. All 3 forms of selection share 2 features: heritable variation among individuals, differences among individuals in number of surviving offspring. Individuals who reproduce most will pass on most copies of their alleles. These alleles become more common in the population than the alleles of the individuals who reproduced less. 3 types of section: all types: some individuals reproduce more than others. Differ in how it is determined which reproduce the most: artificial section. Humans choose which individuals should pass on their alleles.
