Those in power hold a high status in society. Those without power hold a lower status in society. An ethnic group is a social category of people who share a common culture, eg a common language or dialect; nationality; religion; norms, practices, customs, and history. A racial group is a group of people treated as a distinct group based upon certain biological characteristics which have been assigned a social importance. Sociologists differentiate between membership in a minority or a majority group. Prejudice is the evaluation of a group and an individual in it based on conceptions about the group. Discrimination is overt negative and unequal treatment of the members of some social group or stratum solely because of their membership in that group or stratum.
