Other Types of Personality
- We have talked about the Big 5 and that does actually cover a lot of variance in
personality traits and how we differ on them
- The big 5 do seem to fit the variance that we see in personality best
- Even though these constructs are latent (hidden), we differ on them in important
ways that predict behavior
- Even though they’re complex, they’re still in your brain in some form
- There are also other ways people vary in personality
- Some of these are more focused measurement on big 5 traits
- Some of these are outside of that framework

Facets of the Big 5
- Lower-order components of a higher-order factor
- The facets of the big 5 include constructs that group together to form these higher
order constructs like extraversion
- Just as there are different takes on what’s in the big 5, there are different models
regarding the facets of the big 5
Psychological Needs
- Do you feel there are many psychological needs that you experience that
themselves may vary across individuals?
- That is, are the psych experiences you think you need more or less than other
people?
Need Theory
- A model that attempts to capture the psychological needs that drive people to
action
- While this is related to motivation in many ways, it is also an individual
difference that varies among individuals and leads to manifestation of behavior
Need Theory: Need for Achievement
- The general desire to succeed and master things
- Self actualisation
- Involves intense, focused and repeated effort in the process of striving towards
difficult goals
- Related to goal setting
- Sources of high need for achievement
1. Praise and rewards for success
2. Desirability
3. Feasibility
4. Goal setting ability
5. A desire to be effective or challenged
6. Parents who encourage independence in childhood
- Characteristics in high need for achievement
1. More intrinsic
2. Achievement is more important than reward
3. Feedback is needed
