Throughout the period of history prior to the 1800s, cultures have had different ways of attempting to deal with mental illness, the vast majority of these being abject failures. There are many historical resources if you"re interested. In general, mental health care lagged behind medical care, which itself was on fairly shaky footing even in the era of early modern psychology. Overall, this was not a good time to have a mental illness. Could be locked up for the rest of your life depending on severity of mental illness. Born in maine in 1802 and for a time in her early years operated a school until poor health led her to stop teaching.
