Document Summary

Schemas are not about how you"re acting right now, but how you will or should act in the future. Self schemas are what you think you will or should do in the future. We are bad at predicting the future. Predicting the future is tricky, and while we have a number of systems in place they don"t always work. We generally underestimate it how long it will take our future selves to complete tasks, leading to needing more time than planned. We generally overestimate the intensity of future feelings, both in positive and negative directions. We generally overestimate the length of time positive or negative feelings will impact us. Decision making shortcuts that we build based on learning and experience. A decision making shortcut that we use to classify items into different categories. We generally do this classification based on similarity to our conceptual prototype of category membership. Again, these categories can range from fairly broad to fairly specific.
