Conception: sperm cells surround an ovum, one sperm penetrates the eggs jelly like outer coating and the sperm will end up fusing to the egg cell through chemical events. Prenatal development: embryo grows and develops rapidly. Habituation: a simple form of learning that occurs when an organism shows a decrease in response to some stimulus after repeated presentation of that stimulus. Maturation: the brain unfolds through a biologically programmed growth process. Neural networks in the brain increasingly grow more complex. Cognition: all mental activities associated with thinking, knowing, remembering and communicating. Infantile amnesia: a phenomenon in which our earliest memories seldom predate our third birthday. Schema - a mental model of something in the world. Assimilation - an individual incorporation of new information into existing knowledge (schemas)
