PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Heart Rate, Snoring, Shift Work
Document Summary
An organism"s awareness of its own self and surroundings. Altered state: mental states, other than ordinary waking consciousness, found during sleep, dreaming, psychoactive drug use and hypnosis. Inattentional blindness: the failure to notice an unexpected stimulus when our attention is directed elsewhere. Circadian rhythms are daily biological cycles that are about 24 hours long. Regulated by the suprachiasmatic nuclei in the hypothalamus. Environment factors like the day-night-cycle also affect circadian rhythms. Blue light from electronics can affect cycle. Evolutionary theory: as a species, sleep evolved to occur conserve energy and as a protection from predators. Repair/restoration theory: sleep serves a recuperative function, allowing organisms to repair or replenish key factors. Growth/development theory: sleep is correlated with physical development. Learning/memory theory: sleep is important for learning and consolidation, storage, and maintenance of memory. Rapid eye movement (rem) sleep: marked by rapid eye movements, high-frequency brain waves, paralysis of large muscles, and dreaming.
