PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Physical Abuse, Satanic Ritual Abuse, Reid Technique
Document Summary
Memory the persistence of learning over time through the storage and retrieval of information. Flashbulb memory a clear memory of an emotionally significant event. Sensory memory -> short-term memory -> long-term memory. Short-term memory has been more recently conceptualized as working memory. Working memory an understanding of short-term memory that involves conscious, active processing of incoming auditory and visual-spatial information, and of information retrieved from long-term memory. There are two general classes of encoding: effortful, automatic. Automatic processing unconscious encoding of incidental information. White a tremendous amount of information is at our fingertips, essentially for free, some information can only be attained through cognitive hard work. Effortful processing - encoding that requires attention and conscious effort. Rehearsal the conscious repetition of information, either to maintain it in consciousness or to encode it for storage. Studying is rehearsal, and one simple principle determines what is remembered: the amount remembered depends on the time spent learning.
