Distinguished into four possible note lengths: very short, short, long, and very long. Described by franco of cologne in his book, ars cantus mensurabilis in 1280. Purposefully more complex than older styles of music. Notre dame became known as polyphony ars antiqua (old art) Smaller notes with more rhythmic specificity and syncopation. Isorhythm- repeating patterns of rhythms (talea) and melody (color) Musica ficta- adding chromatisms (accidentals) in order to avoid undesirable harmonic intervals. One surviving copy is interspersed with 126 pieces of music in the ars nova style. Thought to be by philippe de vitry. Credited as the father of the ars nova.
