Began as a revolt of the aristocracy. The ideas of the enlightenment were influential. King not concerned with the growing conflicts. Marie antoinette seen as over sexed and frivolous hated by the people. Popular uncertainty: the estates general. An old feudal assembly that had not met since 1614. The miscalculation and lack of social awareness of the aristocracy: the third estate. Third estate was dominated by the middle class. Went to the estates conference in order to reform the system at the first place. Withdraw and form their own governing body called the national assembly 20 june. Picked up the ideas and slogans of the revolution from the more educated leadership. Heightened expectations and the exposure to political perspective cahiers . Strong dislike for and distrust of the wealthy.
