ISB 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Pesticide Resistance, Body Louse, Pyrethrum
Document Summary
As our human ancestors began to domesticate plants and animals we began to use selective breeding. Mixing parent material for a desired set of characteristics. We"ve made it easier for pests to locate crops. Plants natural defenses are modified (remember the milkweed) This is the beginning of the pesticide age. Developed to kill a broad range of insect pests to promote greater output of agriculture. Ddt was widely adopted for agriculture & home. Unsafe levels: organophosphate insectides can harm a developing brain. Some degree of pesticide resistance has been observed for every major class of insecticide used in agriculture. Aphids are now resistant to over 71 synthetic chemical insecticides. The end outcome is more application of pesticides. This is a new movement toward sustainable agriculture. The use of living organisms (natural enemies) to reduce a pest population. A goal is to increase the environmental pressure on pests .
