Beliefs that the elderly are neglected and isolated ten to reflect myth more than reality. Likely to be living with either spouse or other relatives than alone. Remain fairly well connected to their families. Some are happy to see their children to leave home. Some continue to accommodate their adult children under the parental roof (boomerang) Enjoy good health, are firmly established in their work and have their highest discretionary spending power because their children have gone. Older couples have greater potential for engaging in pleasurable activities together and separately. The loss of one"s spouse= variety of deep and painful emotions. Both women and men lose their chief source of emotional support when widowed. Widowhood is often associated with a significant decline in income, especially for poorer families. One common response is to glorify their marriages and their deceased spouses. Women who have had a close marriage may be reluctant to start a new relationship.
