Document Summary

The human body is composed of trillions of cells. Each cell functions as a self-contained living entity. Cells have various functions and die at varying rates. Organ systems work together as part of the body systems: body systems, circulatory and lymphatic system. 2 types of body fluids: 1) blood and 2) lymph. Arteries = carry blood containing fresh oxygen from heart to tissues. Veins = carry blood with carbon dioxide from tissues to heart. Hormones = chemical messengers released into the blood by glands. Glands: organs that monitor a condition and produce one or more hormones to regulate that condition. Examples: insulin is secreted by pancreas when blood glucose is too high. Insulin tells the to remove glucose from blood and store it: glucagon is secreted by pancreas when blood glucose is too low. Glucagon tells the liver to release stored glucose into the blood. Eating and exercise: nervous system = also part of body"s communication system.
