Document Summary

Sleep: periodic, natural loss of consciousness; as distinct from unconsciousness resulting from a coma, general anesthesia or hibernation. Measuring sleep activity- sleep researchers measure brain-wave activity, *eye movements, and muscle tension by electrodes that pick up weak electrical signals from the brain, eyes, and facial muscles. Brain waves and sleep stages- beta waves of an alert, waking state and the regular alpha waves of an awake, relaxed state differ from the slower, larger delta waves of deep nrem-3 sleep. Sleep paralysis- conscious but unable to move; rem behavioral disorder- when the brain fails to shut off and you get up and act on your dreams; lucid dream- ability to control your actions in your dreams. Our brain thinks that the things in our dreams are actually going on. The reason that we don"t act upon these during sleep is because our brainstem is shut off.
