Psychology: scientific study of mind and behavior: mind: private inner experience of perceptions, thoughts, memories, and feelings, behavior: observable actions of human beings and nonhuman animals. University of liepzig, germany: first psychology lab, 1879: opened by wilhelm wundt (structuralist, believed that scientific psychology should focus on analyzing consciousness, consciousness: a person"s subjective experience of the world and the mind. Studying consciousness: structuralism: analysis of the basic elements that constitute the mind. Introspection: subjective observation of one"s own experiences without adding definitions: structuralists used introspection. Main theories of psychology in chronological order: development of clinical psych, psychoanalytic theory (founder: freud, behaviorism, humanistic psych, development of cognitive psych, social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, cultural psychology. Behaviorists and humanistic psychologists were against freud & psychoanalytic theory. Behaviorism: psychologists must restrict themselves to the study of objectively observable behavior, mind= black box, all about stimulus and response, response=human behavior, stimulus=what goes on in the environment.
