Alapana appears at the beginning of the kriti performance, before the actual kriti composition has been played! Alapana provides a way for the melodic performers to showcase: the raga itself, his/her ability, and knowledge/mastery of the raga. Alapana, tanam, the kriti itself, other improvisations, pallavi (refrain) (beginning) Performers never just play the composed piece of music by itself, but adds improvised segments to the performance (some happen in time before the kriti is even played and some after) (end) A kriti serves as a basis for developing numerous improvisations. Every type of improvisation added to a kriti is based in some way on the kriti itself: Drum solo based on the raga the raga kriti phrase(s) the raga the tala.
