Kritis comprise the major portion of most carnati (south indian) recitals. A fixed composition but: typically transmitted orally (not written down) Traditionally performed with multiple improvised components added. Kritis are songs (meaning, they have text!) Often, devotional in nature (almost like a prayer: devotional song is one that pleads to or honors a deity. Can be performed by instrumentalists: (i. e. , the text wouldn"t be heard but listeners will likely recognize anyway!) The performance of a kriti actually includes material improvised material.
