String instruments are able to pitch bend and ornament/decorate the elements very easily, making them very popular for melodic instruments. Kanjira (looks like a tambourine with one set of jingles) That which colors the mind : many different shades/possibilities in creating melody like a scale (a collection of pitches) Ragas may be associated with emotions times of the day seasons. Of course, this allows for literally hundreds of possible ragas! Major point: only one raga is used in a given piece of icm (indian classical music) (in other words: pieces in icm never modulate(key change/tonal center changes)) Metric concept: tala tala= the indian term for meter (cycle of beats) As with ragas, each piece of icm uses only one tala! 8 beats organized 4 + 2+ 2. Parampara = uninterrupted series or succession: (ie. , a lineage or family tree )
