Document Summary

Ids 159 lecture 22 chapter 4: individualism & privilege. It is difficult to realize our interconnection with the environment for several. Reasons: the emphasis on individualism in us society makes it difficult to see social influences, our cultural environment is so close to us that sometimes we don"t see it. That is called enculturation: enculturation: is immersion in a culture to the point where that way of life appears only natural. Often, we don"t think about certain beliefs that are so embedded in us. Consequently, our beliefs influence our judgment/actions: some people experience social marginality (exclusion) that results of being seen as an outsider. Expanding our knowledge of others and their worlds: knowing about others is instrumental in laying the foundation for diversity consciousness. Differences: we learn about cultural differences by sampling and studying a few noteworthy events and people.
