Ids 159 lecture 20 barriers to success continued. Stereotypes: a generalization about an entire group of people, so we gather people into categories and assume they are all alike. We learn stereotypical images through our interaction with family, media, and other social influences. Over time, these stereotypes are reinforced and internalized: stereotypes are very rigid and difficult to change, they revolve around every dimension of diversity. It is the dangers of not performing up to our ability because of fear of perpetuating the stereotypes. When we are stereotyped, we feel vulnerable and low self-esteem: even what so-called positive stereotypes are damaging, because they imply that everyone within a group manifests that trait. Also, it limits the group potential to that trait: vulnerability to stereotypes is very significant in academic achievement. Implications of stereotypes: fear of conforming to stereotypical expectations created a pressure-packed situation for students.
