This one battle was going to end the war because of the quality of the volunteer soldiers(cream of the crop) and it was going to be followed by the largest artillery battle. About (cid:1151) of a million killed in each battle, (cid:1152) of a million wounded during each battle. Efforts to find a shortcut or technical solution to break the trench stalemate. First attempt: 1915: use of poison gas(first used by the germans) Poison gas: tricky because you depended on the winds to carry it.
