Spatial science: studies the phenomena that occur in space. Physical geography: study of physical processes and the patterns in the natural environment. Human geography: study of spatial organization of human activity. Study of people"s" relationships with their environment. Purpose: to look at how and why physical and cultural items differ from place to place. Specific geographic setting with distinctive physical, social and cultural attributes. Environmental justice: people in higher poverty areas are exposed to more toxins in the environment. Function of a place can change at any given time. Meanings are not inherent to a place, they are assigned by the people experiencing the place. Places with specific intent to commemorate a specific event or person. Meanings contribute to one"s sense of place. Sense of place contributes to a person"s" identity. Insider: direct experiences with a specific place. Outsider: not a direct experience, but the place is a universally recognized symbol.
