Use of physical violence to gain or demonstrate power in family relationships: child maltreatment (neglect most common, or abuse, elder abuse. Overall, rates are decreasing: due to increased gender equality, raised awareness. 2014: more than 634,000 victimizations: 1/3 were serious violent crimes (involving rape, murder, weapons, severe injury) Same sex couples: rates similar to different sex-couples. Rates vary by gender, race/ethnicity, and age: women are more likely to be victims and experience more severe violence, victim rates are highest in native american women, tend to be young adults. Girls age 16-24 are the most common age group to be in an abusive relationship. Isolation from friends and family: change in behavior, dress, moods, etc. How to help: don"t blame the victim.
