Several problems: system failure, physical theft, software and information theft, unauthorized access, network attacks, quite a variety. Cyberspace: introduced by gibson in 1984 neuromancer novel. From those: cybercrime, cyberpunk, cyberspy were derived. Computer crimes were not crimes until the 80"s where the possibilities of attacks were discovered. Perpetrators are called: hackers, crackers, script kiddie, corporate spy, cyberextortionist, cyberterrorist. Issues: there are lot of people who want to cause harm, for different reasons and at different levels. Cracker: get ss numbers to commit fraud. Security is more important with the advent of networking. It is generally agreed that security is needed at every level in the protocol stack. Originally, the osi presentation layer was designed to implement security. Cryptography: studies methods to send messages that can"t be interpreted by unintended recipients.
