How language is used by various culture groups. Pragmatics: how meaning is constructed, in terms of speakers and receivers. Phonetics: the study of sounds, how words are pronounced. Nominalist position: perception is not shaped by language, language is arbitrary. People have the same range of thought regardless of where they are from; just expressed differently because of their language. Relativist position: the language that people speak shapes their perception of reality. Qualified relativist position: moderate view of language and perception. Meanings depend upon framework of basic cognitive. Recent findings related to sapir-whorf hypothesis concepts. Children"s language acquisition: language and thought are interrelated. Cross cultural differences: you don"t need a particular language to perceive the world in a particular way. Cognition in deaf kids words help to organize and focus thoughts. Cultural metaphors: helps us to understand a culture and deal with universal concepts. Metamessage: a message that explains what will be happening with other messages.
