HPE 158 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Hans Selye, Homeostasis
Document Summary
Stress is the nonspecific response of the body to any demand. How people react to stress appears to be more important than the stress itself. A stressor is anything that initiates the stress response. Stress is unavoidable and necessary to human preservation. Eustress- good stress, pleasurable and adds meaning to life. Distress- bad stress that elicits a negative response. General adaptation syndrome (gas)- the series of changes that occur in the body with any stress. Homeostasis- when the body s systems are responding to the stresses of everyday life in a balanced and healthy manner. Alarm- the initial disruption in homeostasis, the brain perceives the stressor and assesses how to prepare the body to respond. Resistance- the body responds to the stressor by releasing stress hormones that stimulate body functions necessary for fight or flight, and shut down unessential functions.
