Stata data sets have a . dta file extension. Stata data sets can be opened by clicking on the open icon in the toolbar and browsing folders to find the data set. The variable names for each variable in the data set are listed in the variables window. The properties window contains various information about the variables and the data. One can view a data set by clicking on the data editor icons in the toolbar. There are two data editor icons; one to edit a data set and one to browse a data set. Stata data sets can be saved by clicking on the save icon in the toolbar. Stata do-files allow one to save a set of commands. Do-files can be created and accessed by clicking on the do-file editor icon in the toolbar (note: do-files are created/edited in a separate window)
