Document Summary

For our purposes, music is conceived and organized. (a sound that"s not organized would just be a noise. For example, someone coughing is unorganized, and therefore, for our purposes, is a noise. ) Identity - central to every discussion we"ll have because music is specific; we"re dealing with people, and people have identities. Indefinite pitch - drums have indefinite pitch because while they are tuned, they don"t produce a single pitch. Relativism - the idea that each culture has its specifics (no culture has better music than other cultures) These aren"t genres because each culture will have different folk music, different classical music, and different pop music. Preparation: prepare to study the culture and people of an area. Fieldwork: getting funding, go out to explore, collect music, collect people"s feelings, figure out the musical language, creating relationships. Analysis: must have blessing of cultural leaders to allow us to do this; musical/cultural analysis.
